Closet Racists in Shambles: Coach Tomlin’s Contract Extended to 2027
Closet racists all across the nation came out of hibernation earlier today when the Steelers announced that they are extending Head Coach Mike Tomlin’s contract, tying him to the city of Pittsburgh through the 2027 NFL season.
Everyone that finds themselves reading this post probably knows all the old adages about Coach T. never having a losing season or him being one of only three Steelers head coaches since the hiring of Chuck Noll in 1969. All that is true and awesome, but I’m thrilled about this news for different reasons.
For starters, I love getting on social media and seeing the tiki torch whites throw fits about it. I definitely understand, to an extent, the folks that think that maybe his message has gone stale, or that the lack of postseason success in recent years doesn’t warrant a contract extension, and I’ll address that shortly. However, let’s face the facts…there’s a large number of yinz that have a very real racial vendetta against him because of the color of his skin, and I hope you’re having an awful day today!
On a more personal note, I’m thrilled today, because, as a 28-year-old man, Mike Tomlin has been at the helm of the Pittsburgh Steelers for my entire adult life. Of course, I’m old enough to remember, admire, and respect Bill Cowher, but for me, Coach Tomlin is akin to God, and I’ll be the first to admit that I probably go to great lengths to defend him, even when criticism is necessary. I am, indeed, very biased.
Another reason I’m thrilled with this extension is probably the most simple reason that exists: because the guys on the team are thrilled. If his message in the locker room was stale, I don’t think guys would be going out of their way to celebrate the extension publicly on social media. I saw Russell Wilson, Pat Freiermuth, Patrick Queen, and Justin Fields (among others) share something in support of their Head Coach in lieu of today’s news. Say what you want, but players want to play for Mike Tomlin, and that surely holds significant weight with the Rooneys.
To the folks that are clamoring for postseason success, I see you, I hear you, and I begrudgingly agree with you. Even though we have had regular season success, our last playoff win was back in 2016. The only rebuttal I have is this: patience. From 2017 to now, we had to contend with Ben Roethlisberger who, despite his greatness, was virtually immobile in the pocket at the end of his career, and tremendous uncertainty at the QB position in his wake. If anything, it’s a credit to Coach Tomlin that we were able to remain competitive these last several years under those circumstances. I mean, we made it to the playoffs last year with the third QB on our depth chart. With the moves we’ve made this offseason, we’ve created a scary ass team, and I think it’s only fair that Mike Tomlin gets an opportunity to compete with a complete roster for the first time in a LONG time.
Say what you want about Coach Tomlin, but if you’re upset about this contract, you’re (un)objectively wrong. And, yes, I’m being sarcastic, because I understand how unreasonable I am. However, he’s one of the best coaches in all of sport, and I think these next few years are going to be tremendously successful. Today is a good day to be a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Here We Go!
