Steelers Interview Texans’ QB Coach Jerrod Johnson
The Pittsburgh Steelers have interviewed Houston Texans’ quarterbacks coach, Jerrod Johnson, for their open offensive coordinator position.
This one definitely caught me off guard. I’ve been following this situation closely (from a fan’s perspective, of course; I say this often…I DO NOT HAVE SOURCES), but between Twitter/X and the Steelers Reddit sub, I haven’t seen this name pop up even once. It makes sense though, doesn’t it?
Prior to being hired as the QBs coach of the Houston Texans, Jerrod Johnson was the assistant quarterbacks coach of the Minnesota Vikings during the 2022 season. That year, QB Kirk Cousins threw 424 completions (4th in the NFL) for 4,547 yards (4th in the NFL), and 29 touchdowns (fifth in the NFL). Clearly, he was one of the most consistent quarterbacks in football that year, and he led the Vikings to a 13-4 regular season record, winning them the NFC North.
The Texans took notice of Kirk Cousins’ consistency, and nabbed Jerrod Johnson for their open QB coach position for the 2023 season to coach their shiny, new rookie QB, C.J. Stroud. I’m not even going to list C.J. Stroud’s stats, which are awesome, because that doesn’t even tell the story. If you haven’t had a chance to watch C.J. Stroud during his first year in Houston, just go look up the highlights, and come back here when you’re done. The dude is a certified BALLER, and probably should’ve finished higher than he did in the MVP voting if we’re taking the M.V.P. acronym literally (AKA value to their team). Jerrod Johnson had a professional responsibility to make the transition from college to the pros as seamless as possible for C.J. Stroud, and he, arguably, couldn’t have done a better job. Johnson also got a glowing endorsement from C.J. Stroud when he was asked about the impact his QB coach had on him during his rookie year.
So, I love that we interviewed this guy. It’d be interesting to see what he could be capable of as a playcaller. He could certainly help in the development of Kenny Pickett, assuming he’s still gonna be QB1 going forward.
