Steelers Interview Thomas Brown for Their OC Position
The Pittsburgh Steelers have completed their first face-to-face interview for their offensive coordinator position, and the candidate is the Carolina Panthers’ OC, Thomas Brown.
Admittedly, when I first read this, I thought to myself what in the hell is going on, and why would we do such a thing? I’m really glad I did some digging before I took to the internet and spewed my prejudice.
The Panthers ranked in the bottom half of the league in…well… everything offensively in the 2023 season. The Panthers would’ve been a tough environment for even the most experienced playcaller, but 2023 was Thomas Brown’s first offensive coordinator job at the NFL level. With that being said, I think we owe him the benefit of the doubt, and his resume is indicative of that.
His NFL coaching career began in 2020, when he served as the running backs coach with the Los Angeles Rams. That year, the Rams were a top 10 rushing attack in the NFL, averaging 126.1 yards per game. The following season, he maintained his position as the running backs coach, while also moving up to assistant head coach. In the 2021 season, the Rams were a top 10 offense in both points scored and total yards. Of course, that’s also the year the Rams won the Super Bowl. He remained in Los Angeles until he was picked up by the Carolina Panthers for their offensive coordinator position in 2023.
Also, Thomas Brown completed two interviews with the Tennessee Titans for their head coaching position, before they elected to hire Brian Callahan.
So, here’s a guy being sought after for head coaching positions around the league, with Super Bowl pedigree, and a proven track record of working with high-powered offenses. And, of course, he comes from the Sean McVay-Kyle Shanahan coaching tree that seems to produce the best of the best in the modern NFL. -wipes sweat from brow
Forgive me for being prejudiced, but when I see that we’re interviewing someone from the Carolina Panthers’ coaching staff, it gives me cause for pause. And, that, folks, is why you do your research.
