Steelers Targeting Rams’ Zac Robinson as OC Candidate

So, it begins!

Senior NFL reporter Albert Breer has reported that the Steelers have put in a request to interview the Los Angeles Rams’ pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

Zac Robinson has an interview tomorrow with the New England Patriots. You can add the Las Vegas Raiders to the list of teams interested in his service as they have also put in a request to interview Robinson.

I don’t know much about Zac Robinson outside of the fact that he comes from the Shanahan/McVay coaching tree that includes Matt LaFleur. Obviously, those three guys have all found success as head coaches in the NFL, and I trust their judgment. Also, just taking in some of what I’ve seen on Twitter/X, Rams’ fans are really high on this guy. The general consensus seems to be that this guy knows offensive football, and will be head coaching material in the future. I’m a known Mike Tomlin apologist, but if the end of his tenure is coming any time in the next several years, it’d be nice to have some guys that fit that ‘head-coaching-material’ tag-line on our coaching staff.

The Rams had a fair amount of success through the air this season, going for 4300 passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns. Neither of those numbers necessarily blow you away, but with RB Kyren Williams running the ball at 5 yards per carry, why would you be throwing the ball all over the place? Prior to being the QB coach and pass game coordinator, he also spent time as the wide receiver coach back in 2020. I only point that out to say that over the last few years, he has taken A LOT of responsibility for the success of guys like Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, Baker Mayfield, and, of course, Matthew Stafford.

So, there’s a lot of excitement around the fact that we’re gonna interview this guy. Seeing how Rams fans feel about him gives me excitement too, seeing as all I know about him is the information I just laid out (which I only just learned today). I know this: he had a hand in the Super Bowl winning Rams’ offense that included Stafford’s best season as a pro, and a legendary run by WR Cooper Kupp.

Also, for what it’s worth, Steelers QB Mason Rudolph lived with Zac Robinson back in 2018 while Robinson helped Mason prepare for the 2018 NFL draft. Yes, you read that correctly (lol). So, if a deal gets done here (and that’s still a BIG if), you may expect to see Mason Rudolph resign with us as well, and battle with Kenny Pickett for the QB1 spot in 2024. Yay, more QB drama.

We shall see.
