Today’s Roster Moves
The Pittsburgh Steelers are releasing QB Mitch Trubisky, P Presssley Harvin III, and OL Chukwuma Okorafor, the team announced on Monday.
Our front office wasted no time, getting these contracts off the books not even 24 hours after the Super Bowl concluded. This move frees up just under $13 million in cap space as they anticipate the new league year beginning on March 13th. Additional moves have to be made in the coming months leading up to the draft, as the team looks to add depth in free agency and (obviously) sign their draft picks. I’m just speculating at this point (I say this often, I’m a blahger not the media…I don’t have sources) but I’d expect guys like WR Allen Robinson, DB Patrick Peterson, and OL Mason Cole to be next on the chopping block. There are also murmurs of possibly restructuring DT Cameron Heyward’s contract to free up additional money for the offseason.
So, today was a good day for Steeler fans. Trubisky and Harvin were extremely likable guys, and I hope they find an NFL home elsewhere (and have some success), but neither one of them produced at the level we expected them to over these last two or so years.
I’ll tell you what though, the Steelers are not messing around this offseason, and I love it. Big changes to the offensive staff, and finally trimming the fat on our roster early on in the offseason are not things we’re accustomed to them doing.
