QB Rumors Including Justin Fields and Ryan Tannehill
Over the weekend, NFL Insiders, including Tom Pelissero, Mike Garafolo, and Ian Rapoport reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to “explore” adding QB Ryan Tannehill.
This move would reunite Tannehill with his former offensive coordinator, and Steelers’ new OC Arthur Smith, and create significant competition for the starting spot with Kenny Pickett, which Mike Tomlin and Art Rooney have both said is necessary.
Tannehill had some of his best years working with Arthur Smith. Needless to say, it would be borderline irresponsible to not at least consider Tannehill as a veteran option heading into the 2024 season. Especially when you consider the flop that was Mitch Trubisky’s tenure with the Steelers, and his likely departure from the team, there’s nothing shocking about this news, and all Steelers fans should welcome it with open arms.
Another, more shocking rumor that emerged (or perhaps I should say was reignited) this morning is the potential that the Steelers could go after Bears QB Justin Fields or Broncos QB Russell Wilson. During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Adam Schefter said that the Steelers are going to add another significant quarterback during this offseason, whether that be Russell Wilson or Ryan Tannehill, also adding: “Keep in mind that Mike Tomlin is a big fan of Justin Fields.”
A whole lot of yinzers out there have been speculating that the Steelers might go after Justin Fields, but this is the first time I’ve heard it from a source as ‘in-the-know’ as Adam Schefter. Still, it’s a pipe dream in my humble opinion. The asking price for Justin Fields, assuming the Bears even want to get rid of him, is going to be very high, and I don’t see the Steelers giving up a first or second round pick to bring in a quarterback who is largely unproven and inconsistent, even though he has shown flashes of excellence. With that being said, I didn’t expect them to trade a first-round pick for S Minkah Fitzpatrick back in 2019, either, and now he’s probably my favorite player on the team, so, clearly, it’s not off the table.
The more likely scenario(s) would be either Ryan Tannehill or Russell Wilson. As long as Wilson passes a physical next month, he will still be getting guaranteed money from the Denver Broncos, and both sides have made it fairly clear that a divorce is necessary. That means the Steelers could be getting a proven, Super-Bowl-winning veteran for pretty damn cheap.
The rumor mill is getting spicy. The NFL Draft is 73 days from today, so a lot of questions are going to be answered over the next few months.
